Here are some lesser-known but interesting neighborhoods and areas in Memphis and its surroundings that could be considered hidden gems:

In Memphis:

  1. Cooper-Young (but off the main drag)
While the core of Cooper-Young is well-known, the quieter side streets (like Oliver or Harbert) have charming older homes, a strong sense of community, and are walkable but less trafficked.

  1. Vollintine-Evergreen

North of Midtown, this neighborhood features beautiful early-20th-century homes, a rich civil rights history, and lots of greenery. It’s relatively affordable and community-driven.

  1. Glenview Historic District

Located south of Midtown, Glenview features tree-lined streets and beautiful historic homes. It’s quieter than nearby neighborhoods but full of character.

  1. Cherokee

Tucked between Orange Mound and East Memphis, this neighborhood is residential and often overlooked, but some areas are seeing quiet revitalization and have unique early-mid century homes.

  1. Crosstown (outside the Crosstown Concourse zone)

While the Concourse is a hub, the surrounding streets still have an off-the-radar vibe. There are cool apartments, artist spaces, and homes being slowly redeveloped.

  1. High Point Terrace

A peaceful enclave in East Memphis, this area has a quaint local strip, mature trees, and a strong neighborhood association—but it’s often overshadowed by larger areas around it.

Surrounding Memphis:

  1. Lakeland (older part near Garner Lake)

While much of Lakeland is newer development, the older parts near the lake have a more rustic, cabin-in-the-woods feel and aren’t as well known.

  1. Rossville, TN

About 30-40 minutes from Memphis, Rossville offers small-town charm, scenic drives, and proximity to the Wolf River without the crowds of Collierville or Germantown.

  1. Arlington’s Historic Depot Square

Arlington is growing fast, but the historic square has kept a lot of its small-town, undiscovered charm with local shops and events.

  1. Eads, TN

This rural area between Memphis and Collierville has estate homes, horse properties, and rolling land, making it an under-the-radar gem for those wanting space.

  1. Bartlett Station

This is the historic area of Bartlett with a small-town vibe, a local museum, and events, but it’s often overlooked for the bigger suburban developments nearby.
